JOANNS: Before Urbex

'JOANNS: Before Urbex' is a short film documenting the permanent closure of the arts and crafts supply store Joann's Fabrics. As depicted in the film, not only the products on the shelves were for sale, but also the actual shelving itself. Spare tools, cabinetry and even the branded Joanns shopping carts were up for grabs.

Whenever there's a closure of a business, building or once designated area for a specific community, I take extra precaution in how I remember the moments it gave me. I do this because soon the physical state of said place will begin to shift and morph into whatever the next owner's vision is. These moments are known as the calm before the storm. Before the potential urban decay. This piece of recorded history is the bridge holding up fundamental memories patrons associated with the household name and the impending future.

The short film is now available on Youtube on the Sommer The Painter youtube channel: https://youtu.be/_rH2et7GqXw?si=qmpS3R4wpfwl6phN
